The main idea of this units is that because of the law of conservation of matter our trash doesn't just disappear it just changes form. Burning and burying our trash has environmental consequences and so hopefully students figure out that recycling is better but reducing consumption is the best.

Driving Question: Should a community burn or bury their trash?

Science Content: conservation of matter and energy

21st century skills: Communication (sharing ideas through various mediums)

Product: A media campaign to help a community decide what to do with their wastes.

Possible Activities:

Conservation of mass lab

Midway Film (Plastic and birds)

Research about what plastics are made of and what happens to them when they burn or break down over time.

An evaluation of how much plastic waste a community generates.

This project could be connected to math (data analysis), humanities (how past societies have dealt with their trash), language arts (communication)
