PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Our issue that we wanted to help solve was homelessness.
We chose homelessness as something we wanted to change in the world because a lot of people are in this state and we want to help them get out of it.
We wanted to find a way to help homeless people get their needs met that would lead them to a better place in society. We researched several organizations in our area that could help. We went to Oak City Cares and found a way to help out. Our original idea was to build a wood cabinet (for food/item exchanges) outside of the facility so that homeless people could get food, toiletries, masks, etc; but then we realized that wasn't a good choice. We would have to keep restocking it/not sustainable, and Oak City Cares already has food and other items available for everyone. When we toured Oak City Cares there was an area in the building that was a kids area/room. Kids used this area to play in and have fun. Outside there were picnic tables for people to sit and have their meals, talk, and read. We saw that it didn't look like there was a place for kids like a kids picnic table or area outside to play. So we decided to build picnic tables for kids. The people who benefited from this project were the less fortunate and at risk youth.
We chose kids picnic tables because there aren't any at Oak City Cares so we decided that it would be nice to add something outside on the patio for only the kids to enjoy. This project relates to homelessness because we're helping kids who are less fortunate and a lot of homeless people are less fortunate because their seen differently than “regular” human beings.
