Objective: Keeping E-waste out of the landfills

Students of Suncity School acted on the latest hazard to our environment, E-waste.

The effects of improper disposal of E-waste on the environment are still being discovered and it is not looking promising; these impacts pose very real threats and dangers to not just the immediate surroundings but also to the global environment. Improper disposal of electronic waste affects our soil, air, and water. Roughly 40 million metric tons of electronic waste are produced globally each year, and only about 13 percent is recycled.

Mostly, we throw it away. When we throw out our computers, cell phones, etc, they end up in landfills, causing the possibility of toxic metals entering the groundwater. Toxins from the metals in electronics are also released in to the atmosphere.

Students realised that just as technology can be a boon to us, improper disposal of e-waste can be detrimental to us.

Integrating Art and ICT, the entire school worked on creative Art projects on the theme of nature, using e-waste. Students experienced hands on, the impact of e-waste generation and disposal. Adding Recreating, a sixth R to the existing 5 Rs, students made pot holders using e-waste and grew plants in them. A huge garden installation of a CD butterfly saw a lot of enthusiasm. Senior students too worked with the theme of Nature when they dismantled old computers and used old CDs to create a magnificent e-waste tree.
