PROJECT GOALS:

- students identify a need for change in our school

- students experience the process of researching and advocating for change.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES:

Student Voice;

-students created an online survey to research snacks other students were/were not bring to school

-students created a video plea to Parent Council and Principal Bailey regarding the need for educating the school community to eat healthy and to help students who don’t have recess snacks

-students researched Rainbow Plate Workshops and advocated parent council to pay for 4 FDK workshops called There’s a Rainbow in my Classroom and 1 Grade 3 workshop called Food Detectives

-Ms Bailey (Principal) paid for a Rainbow Plate workshop for our parent community

School and Community Awareness;

-students created Healthy Snack posters which are displayed throughout the school

- Rainbow Plate workshops took place at our school

-Parents attended a Rainbow Plate workshop called How to Raise a Healthy Eater

-Students researched the benefits of growing their own food

-students planted vegetable seeds

-students and staff expanded, planted and cared for our school vegetable garden

School and Community Involvement;

- Parents asked to contribute healthy recipes for Wilmington E.S. Cookbook

- Cookbook on sale with proceeds going toward a snack program for the 2014-2015 school year

- Ms Bailey in process of applying for grant money for snack program for the 2014-2015 school year

Collaboration!

This project was a collaboration between a kindergarten class and a grade 3 class however, the library became an important hub for all classes to get involved in the healthy eating project.
